LITTER ENFORCEMENT WEEK 2008 - 2010
Litter Enforcement Week (LEW), the precursor to Litter Enforcement Month, became was established by the Trash Free Potomac Watershed Initiative and the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments’ (MWCOG) Police Chief’s Committee in 2008. Its intent: to support our local Law Officers as they dedicate one week to vigorously enforce litter laws, illegal dumping, and unsecured truck load laws. The Police Chief’s Committee voted to support these efforts by highlighting enforcement as a way to both educate and positively change behavior – helping to eliminate the area’s trash and litter problems.
Litter Enforcement Resources
Jurisdictions around the area including City of Alexandria, Arlington, Prince George’s County, Montgomery County, and the District of Columbia participated and each were free to enforce laws that seemed most appropriate to their need and resources. It was important to all parties involved that education was top priority with both officers and citizens of the community. Trainings provided by Prince George’s County Police Department were open to officers in the region. In 2010, one hundred and sixteen police officers attended from Maryland, District of Columbia and Virginia.
Media for this week-long event focused on educating the public that litter laws do exist, have high penalties, and are enforced. A 30 second Litter Enforcement Public Service Announcement was created and can be used by television and radio stations year round.
